World’s first: BYD’s 10-millionth NEV rolls off the assembly line

On November 18, the 30th anniversary celebration of BYD and the unveiling of the Company’s 10-millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) took place at BYD’s Xiaomo Industrial Park in the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone. During the event, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu shared for the first time on the Company’s 30-year entrepreneurial journey. From a small startup with just 20 employees three decades ago, to a multinational corporation with nearly one million staff members by upholding the spirit of engineers, namely, “thinking big, acting boldly and confidently, and never giving up”. He noted that BYD’s dedication to technological innovation has helped meet people’s aspirations for a better life, and BYD has made efforts to give back to society, vehicle buyers, and its employees.

Now, BYD has become the world’s first carmaker to see its 10-millionth NEV roll off the assembly line, marking a new milestone for both BYD and China’s automobile industry. This also signifies that China has made solid headway in transitioning from a big automobile maker to an automobile powerhouse, ushering in a new phase of high-quality development for Chinese automobiles. It took BYD as many as 15 years to reach the first 5 million mark; while merely 15 months were spent before BYD saw its next 5-million vehicles rolling off the assembly line. The record-breaking performance in China’s automobile industry has justified once more BYD’s unwavering commitment to NEVs and technological innovation.

At the event, Wang Chuanfu presented the 10-millionth vehicle, a Denza Z9, to Feng Ji, Founder and CEO of Game Science, the producer of the video game “Black Myth: Wukong”. Feng Ji noted that he felt privileged to become the owner of BYD’s 10-millionth NEV, and pledged to work with BYD to tell China’s story well through world-class practices.

During the event, Wang Chuanfu noted that BYD couldn’t make it without upholding the spirit of thinking big, acting boldly and confidently, and never giving up. This courage not only shapes BYD but also defines the Chinese nation. The Company unveiled the stunning and majestic official song named “Gan” (meaning courage in Chinese) for the 30th anniversary to pay tribute to every dream chaser.

BYD’s courage is derived from the confidence in its technological competence, which results from its craftsmanship. According to Wang Chuanfu, the soul of engineers constitutes the soul of BYD, and as long as the spirit remains, BYD could stage a comeback at any time even if we lost everything, including our factory buildings, patents, and stocks. Qin Shuo, a famous media professional and an economic observer, interviewed nearly 100 senior executives and ordinary employees of BYD, totaling200 hours of audio recordings and around 1.5 million words of scripts. Based on these resources, he has written The Soul of Engineers, the sole book officially authorized by BYD, to introduce BYD in the most authentic way to the outside world.

Furthermore, Wang Chuanfu has reviewed BYD’s three-decade history in a systematic manner, and then involved himself deeply in the formulation of BYD Basic Outline. According to Wang, the Outline summarizes BYD’s past practices and the underlying logic for development, and serves as a guideline for future actions.

To thank its tens of millions of consumers and a million-strong employees, 90 lucky audiences were randomly picked in the event to be presented with the right to use new vehicles, all witnessed by the Shenzhen Pingshan Notary Office.

Furthermore, Wang Chuanfu announced plans to earmark RMB3 billion for an education-oriented charitable fund, and set up scholarships in universities across the country. BYD will donate anatomical NEV models to vocational schools, museums, and science venues across the country in an attempt to promote popularization of science, arouse students’ interest in automobile technology and intelligent manufacturing, and help cultivate a larger number of outstanding engineers.

BYD’s current achievements would not have been possible without the support from all sectors of society. Wang Chuanfu championed concrete actions (setting up a charitable fund worth RMB3 billion, presentation of the right to use 30 Yangwang U8 vehicles, 30 Tengshi Z9GT vehicles, and 30 Formula Leopard Bao 8 vehicles) to give back to society, vehicle buyers and employees, and extend sincere gratitude to all partners throughout the journey.

Looking ahead, BYD will earmark RMB100 billion to develop intelligent technology, integrating AI with vehicles, in an effort to achieve full vehicle intelligence and secure a leading position in future technology. Driven by the green transition, BYD will continue to uphold the engineer spirit, namely, “thinking big, acting boldly and confidently, and never giving up”, and unremittingly pursue technological innovation to meet people’s aspirations for a better life and build a world-class high-tech company.
