New Progress in Shenzhen-Shanwei High-Speed Railway!

On May 9, the “Longgang 3” Earth Pressure Balance (EPB)/TBM dual-mode shield machine, the largest diameter of its kind in China, successfully initiated tunneling at the Weiling Shield Section of the SSSG-8 contract section (Tanglangshan Tunnel) of the Shenzhen-Shanwei High-Speed Railway constructed by Shanghai Civil Engineering Co., Ltd. of CREC. This milestone marks the project’s full entry into the large-diameter shield tunneling phase.

As a major infrastructure project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Shenzhen-Shanwei High-Speed Railway begins at Shenzhen Xili Station and terminates at the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone, where it connects with the Guangzhou-Shanwei High-Speed Railway via the Shenshan Station. The route traverses several districts within Shenzhen and parts of Huizhou, extending a total length of 125.5 kilometers, featuring six stations, 18 double-track tunnels, and 37 large- and medium-sized bridges.

The SSSG-8 section, constructed by Shanghai Civil Engineering Co., Ltd. of CREC, has a total mainline length of approximately 9.96 kilometers, comprising three tunnels, two bridges, one open-cut launching shaft, two subgrade sections, and an inclined shaft at Jintang.

The “Longgang 3” shield machine features a maximum excavation diameter of 14.29 meters (equivalent to the height of a five-story building), a main body length of 14.6 meters, a total length of 125 meters, and a total weight of approximately 4,250 tons. It is currently the largest-diameter EPB/TBM dual-mode shield machine in China and the only ultra-large-diameter EPB/TBM dual-mode shield machine along the entire Shenzhen-Shanwei High-Speed Railway line.

According to the construction plan, the “Longgang 3” shield machine will commence tunneling from the large-mileage end of the east-side shield launching shaft at Luohu North Station in Shenzhen, and eventually be retrieved and disassembled in the underground excavation chamber, covering a construction section of approximately 3.41 kilometers.

The shield tunnel is located in the main urban area of Shenzhen, passing beneath or alongside 16 major above-ground and underground buildings and structures along its route. Featuring a long tunneling distance, dense population, complex environments, and extensive coordination needs, this section represents a groundbreaking benchmark for long-distance construction of the dual-mode, ultra-large-diameter shield machine on the entire Shenzhen-Shanwei High-Speed Railway line.

Upon completion, the Shenzhen-Shanwei High-Speed Railway project will significantly enhance the integration of the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone with Shenzhen, facilitating its deep incorporation into the development dynamic of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This project will play a pivotal role in strengthening connectivity between Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone, and the Yangtze River Delta, accelerating the development of coastal high-speed railways, optimizing the external railway connections of the Shenzhen hub, and advancing the construction of the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone.
