“Straw-woven dragon dance” in Shangjie Village is another folk activity with distinctive local features. The traditional folk performance, in which straw-woven dragons are worshiped, covers a lot of substantive contents on history, folk custom, art, etc., and is an important means used by villagers to pray for blessings or happiness.
“Straw-woven dragon dance” is usually performed during the Lantern Festival. Dozens of professionally trained dragon dancers, dressed gorgeously in elaborate costumes, put on the performance amid the resounding beats of drums and gongs. The dragons sometimes stir the sea, spray the mist or two dragons play with a pearl. They seem to fly through clouds, or brew storms on rivers and seas from time to time. The straw-woven dragon dance conveys people’s pursuit of and aspiration for good fortune, health and happiness.
