Teochew opera
From:Shenshan Special Cooperation ZoneUpdated:2025-06-17

In Shenshan, traditional opera performances are affectionately referred to by the locals as “acting in a play”, and gain wide popularity among local residents. The most one is no other than Teochew opera, which is included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.

Teochew opera, known as the most time-honored form of opera, is performed in Fulao dialect and showcases distinctive local characteristics. Due to a variety of performing forms, vivid and exquisite facial makeups, a rich repertoire of classical operas and talented master performers, Teochew opera is performed the most frequently and watched by the largest audiences, which speaks to its well-deserved acclaim.

As the only survived type of “Nan Xia Bai Zi”, Teochew opera is one of the most time-honored and rarest operas in China, and was included in the first batch of the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006.
